I was born to be a salesman. My mother would tell you that too. I’ve always loved talking to people and making deals. Now I sell for a living and haggle with other salespeople for fun.
Test driving a car, casing a custom trade show display or flea market, and walking through a new house with a real estate agent are some of my favorite leisure activities. It’s not even about the money for me. I just love sparring.
There’s nothing better than a well put together trade show booth. If I can tell exactly who the company is targeting, I try to put myself in that audience’s mind set. I want to be sucked in almost to the point of pulling out my credit card. As the person manning the exhibit gives her pitch, I try to poke holes in her story. If salespeople can think on their feet and make it interesting I always let them know I think they’re great at their job. Sometimes I’ll even tip really good ones. This usually leads to a good conversation about the method behind their custom trade show exhibit design.
I especially like salespeople who are way too pushy or manipulative. They will join you on a roller coaster ride as you swing from being ready to buy the store to ready to leave the store and back. I try not to take it too far with them though unless I’m really looking to buy. Salespeople like this don’t usually handle failure well.
Maybe this isn’t the most healthy form of recreation. My wife now refuses to go shopping with me at all. She never did appreciate a beautiful custom trade show display like I do. And I’ve seen a few car salesmen get pretty hot under the collar when I told them I wasn’t really in the market. But in the end I think it makes us both better at our jobs. Life’s too short to take yourself too seriously.
